Laura González-Possamai's artistic practice is an exploration of migration and displacement, using memories as a tool for recollection, confrontation, and the reclamation of cultural identities. Through the use of layering or flawed, out-of-focus photographs, the work delves into the incoherent, fragmented nature of memory. In processing these memories, there is a sense of a forced adaptation in which our ability to remember and forget enables us to navigate and respond to a variety of contexts and conditions.
Born in New York City in 1989 to Uruguayan immigrants seeking a better life, González-Possamai captures transient moments in her dynamic environment through photography. Her work examines how these fleeting experiences echo the complexities of memory and cultural identity. By documenting and preserving these ephemeral snapshots, she addresses the ongoing journey of navigating and reclaiming her cultural heritage within an ever-changing world.
